Apple Cider Vinegar: The Amazing Health Benefits of this Economical "Old Timers Home Remedy"

Want to cure sugar cravings, promote weight loss, aid your digestion and improve your immunity? It may be as simple as choosing the RIGHT vinegar!

Vinegar has been used throughout history for everything from skin tonics to household cleaners.

Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician and "Father of Modern Medicine," believed in the healing properties of vinegar, as did the ancient Babylonians before him and the Samurai warriors in Japan later on.

In fact, vinegar has been used in a number of surprising ways, including:

  • Relief from heartburn and arthritis
  • To lower blood pressure and cholesterol
  • To aid digestion
  • To treat ear infections
  • To treat yeast infections (candida).
  • Relief for rashes, sunburn and jellyfish stings
  • To clean the house, polish glass and make laundry look brighter
  • To promote weight loss
  • Skin detoxification

But it's not just a folk remedy...vinegar has medicinal properties as well.

Research has shown that vinegar can help people with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance (not diabetic, but high risk) by improving insulin sensitivity. In the study, vinegar was just as effective as drugs (metformin and acarbose) used to treat diabetes.1

Vinegar may be one of your most useful natural health remedies...if you're using the right vinegar.

Finding the Right Apple Cider Vinegar

Mrs. Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar is a great option for organic raw apple cider vinegar with medicinal benefits. Try some with your Body Ecology meals today!

For a true home health remedy that helps boost your immunity, pass on white vinegar and choose raw apple cider vinegar instead.

Apple cider vinegar is manufactured by several different companies. While you may have seen apple cider vinegar in the grocery store, it may not be theraw, fermented apple cider vinegar with medicinal benefits.

Here's what to look for when buying apple cider vinegar:

  • Unfiltered - Some bottles are labeled "filtered," while the kind we recommend is labeled "unfiltered."
  • Unpasteurized - Unpasteurized apple cider vinegar contains the "mother" of the vinegar (a natural sediment with pectin, trace minerals, beneficial bacteria and enzymes), which you can see floating at the bottom of the bottle.
  • Organic - choosing apple cider vinegar made with organic apples is a great way to maximize the minerals and minimize your exposure to pesticides.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Your Inner Ecosystem

Apple cider vinegar is rich in potassium and helps to re-establish a healthy inner ecosystem, your key to strength and immunity.

A healthy inner ecosystem is made up of the friendly microflora (good bacteria and yeast) that act as your internal health team of sorts. They aid your digestion and help you get the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Unfortunately, most Americans today have an imbalanced inner ecosystem.

In fact, biologists at Rice University found that 70% of Americans are affected by candida, a systemic fungal infection that occurs when your inner ecosystem is out of balance.2

This inner ecosystem imbalance could be present at birth or occur from poor diet and lifestyle habits setting the stage for pathogens that overpower healthy microflora.

For healing and detoxification, apple cider vinegar is a great addition to your Body Ecology lifestyle.

In addition to nourishing your inner ecosystem, apple cider vinegar can:

  • Restore your body's natural pH balance - Your blood is supposed to be slightly alkaline, but just as poor diet and lifestyle habits harm your inner ecosystem, they also harm the pH balance of your blood. As your blood becomes acidic, the stage is set for illness. Apple cider vinegar helps restore your body's pH.
  • For more information on the pH or acid/alkaline levels of your blood, please see:http://bodyecology.com/newsletters/06/11/30/drugs_make_blood_acidic.php
  • Aid digestion - Apple cider vinegar helps stimulate your stomach acid, aiding the digestion of protein and fats. Good digestion is essential for staying healthy and naturally slim.
  • Promote the growth of healthy microflora - apple cider vinegar is a prebiotic, which feeds probiotics (the healthy microflora in your inner ecosystem). For more, read: Why Prebiotics are Essential to Your Heart Health and Immune System.
  • Stop sugar cravings - use apple cider vinegar next time you have a craving for that bowl of ice cream or piece of chocolate cake. Here's a quick remedy that may stop you from indulging: Add two teaspoons of raw apple cider vinegar to a 6 oz glass of filtered water, and drink it down.

Because of apple cider vinegar's importance to your health and immunity, it is a key ingredient in many Body Ecology salad dressings and sauces. Get your copy of The Body Ecology Diet to learn even more uses for apple cider vinegar, including delicious recipes.

Inexpensive and effective, apple cider vinegar is an item no home should be without.

  • I just throw back 1 Tablespoon of Bragg's Organic Raw Apple Cider Vinegar once or twice a day. I try not to mix it in my mouth because I don't mix it with water and don't know if it would not be great on my teeth raw. But I then swish & swallow some water afterwards. I love it. It makes me shake, because it's yummy and strong and wow-powerful. I am 64 years young and am well/healthy. All lab work is totally within normal limits. My doctors love how young and healthy I am! I owe it to God's blessings and directing me to Bragg's!

  • Two years ago I had a very bad case of Psoriasis that caused me years of anguish, frustration, and embarrassment. After researching various "home remedy" websites, I learned that vinegar, honey and lemon juice mixed together were excellent for ending my problem. I read that when taking these three together, for approximately 6 weeks that the psoriasis would be extinguished. About 7weeks later, I was conversing with family when I realized that my psoriasis was gone! Wow! That stuff really worked! I continuously tell others of my thrill in learning of the benefits of vinegar, not only for psoriasis but for the rest of the treatments mentioned in the article above.

  • Here is a brief explanation about acid-forming and alkalizing foods (in short, foods that remove hydrogen ions in the body after digestion are considered alkalizing regardless of their acidity outside of the body.):

Foods are classified as acid-forming or alkalizing depending on the effect they have on the body. An acid-forming food contributes hydrogen ions to the body, making it more acidic. An alkalizing food removes hydrogen ions from the body, making it more alkaline. It is important to note that this classification is based on the effect foods have on the body after digestion, not on their own intrinsic acidity or alkalinity (or how they taste to us). A common misconception is that if a food tastes acidic, it has an acid-forming effect on the body. This is not necessarily true. Very often, an acidic-tasting food is alkalizing. Citric fruits are a good example. People say that lemons, for example, are "too acidic"; however, they are actually alkalizing because the minerals they leave behind after digestion help remove hydrogen ions, decreasing the acidity of the body. (Many people use the term "residue" or "ash" to explain the effect of a food on the body. A food with an acid ash after digestion contributes hydrogen ions, making the body more acidic; a food with an alkaline ash after digestion removes hydrogen ions, making the body more alkaline.)

I drink a daily tea that contains the juice of one lemon, 1/8 tea ACV, a little honey, and sometimes a sprinkle of cayenne pepper and/or or little fresh ginger root. It can be harsh on the teeth enamel so I sometimes use a straw after it cools. Along with a healthy diet and active lifestyle this tea helps keep me from getting sick, keeps me from gaining abdominal weight, and tastes really good. If I miss a day I can feel the difference.

It's also important to note that some people don't tolerate honey daily and shouldn't take it. Also, dairy is very acid forming in the body so taking ACV with milk might cancel out the health benefits. In pharmacy school I learned that someone who has an acute stomach ulcer shouldn't drink milk, even though it might initially feel soothing it eventually turns very acidic in the body and makes the ulcer much worse.

For further information about diet/health/healing check out Thrive Forward with Brendan Brazier, I learned a great deal about diet from him. I hope this information is helpful.

  • I've been drinking ACV for about 5 yrs and have not been ill once since. You can drink it with any other drink you wish. I don't measure, I just poor about an ounce in a glass and fill the rest with whatever fruit juice I have in the frig. ACV saved my life. I have a family history of heart disease, high blood preasure and diabetes. Before I started drinking ACV I was told by a Dr, after test results, that I needed do something immediately because I was high risk for the previously mentioned. 6 months after I started drinking ACV, I went back for the same tests and the test results all showed NORMAL!!! My Dr wrote across the test result page 'Yeah for Vinegar!'

  • I believe it is important to understand that eating organic and staying away from all processed foods is an important part of your over all health. You cannot eat garbage and anticipate that raw vinegar will keep you healthy. If you're eating a proper diet rich in oraganic fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts and berries; the raw organic vinegar is a huge part of a wholesome body. Namaste

  • Drinking apple cider vinegar straight up is not advisable. Too harsh on the esophagus.
It is always best to dilute it with warm water and add a teaspoon of honey or stevia (NOT TRUVIA-it causes dizziness and drop in pressure in some people.)
or you can mix ACV with orange juice or apple juice but should not drink it straight up.

  • Are pro-biotic properties in apple cider vinegar and not other vinegars due to fact that it is unpasteurized? Do other unpasteurized vinegars have he same probiotic properties? There are a couple of companies here in the US that still make vinegars using the live mother and which do not pasteurize in order to keep the vinegars live.

  • I agree with Bellaisa. You have to be prepared for the burn! But as they say no pain no gain! The benefits of apple cider vinegar far outweigh that little bitty burn.

  • I have to say that I tried drinking the apple cider vinegar with the water today. I enjoy vinegar. In fact, I can drink it straight from the bottle, but it did burn a little going down with the water. Be prepared for it to burn - but it did help suppress hunger.

  • I had heard that apple cider vinegar is good for you, but I had not really understood why until reading this post. In fact, the way I found this was in searching for the answer as to why it may be good to give to dogs who are possible candidates for bloat. It's also good to know what to look for when buying apple cider vinegar. Thanks for this information.
