This is something not many people are talking about. Even among health professionals and gut health experts, people don’t talk about colonics or enemas when they're talking about gut health.

But enemas are powerful tools to help us open up our detoxification pathways.

When we use them regularly, cleansings won’t be as severe. Let’s say you wake up one morning, and you’re feeling exhausted. Suppose you got your enema bucket and took about half an hour to do an enema. Then you jump in the shower and get dressed, and you may feel fantastic by the time you’re out the door. This is just one example of how to manage or improve your health with a home enema.

When Do You Need an Enema?

Before we get into enema-techno, let's take a look at what you could see disappear with regular home enemas:

  • Backache

  • Loss of concentration

If you experience any of these conditions, perhaps you should consider an enema. Whenever you're feeling lethargic or constipated, it's a sure sign that an enema should be scheduled into your immediate future. Even if you're feeling great, releasing extra toxins can only make you feel better.

As a note, enemas can help to keep you regular and relieve constipation caused by everyday stresses and our modern diet. But if you find yourself chronically constipated with symptoms that even an enema won’t fix, it’s important to see a doctor right away. In 2016, Yale researchers uncovered a surprising connection between constipation and herpes infection.1 Later that year, another link between constipation and kidney disease was revealed.2 Add to that the fact that chronic constipation can increase the risk of colorectal cancer, and you may have a serious problem on your hands that could benefit from routine home enemas and/or medical help.3

  • Colon Cleansing - If you're using any type of clay cleansing agents to pull toxins out of the system, you'll want to use an enema to help release the bulk. You don't want to pull out toxins and leave them with nowhere to go!
  • Fasting - If you choose to fast, home enemas are critical. You must keep things moving out of your body because your cells will be dumping their toxins quickly. You will feel miserable if you are not cleaning downstream. Once you've done an enema, you’re more hydrated, and all those toxins are out. And you’re going to think twice before you start adding toxic things back to your body. In this way, colonics and enemas help tremendously with food cravings.

Fit for a King

Home enemas are not a new fad or something that's only performed by those obsessed with their health. It wasn't that long ago that home enemas were routinely prescribed by doctors as part of a normal cure for illness.

An Egyptian king, as early as 1500 B.C., was known to receive routine home enemas by a physician who used them for regular medical treatments. The Egyptians believed that all diseases were caused by tainted, unwanted additions to food, or too much food, and understood how an enema could offer relief to serious situations.

Ancient regions in Africa, Greece, Babylonia, India, and China used enemas. American Indians performed enemas. Louis XIV had almost 2,000 enemas in his lifetime and stayed healthy throughout. And even the vivacious and voluptuous Mae West started every day with a morning enema.

While the medical community has somehow disconnected itself from the benefits of home enemas, some medical professionals are slowly coming around. Suzy Cohen, also known as "America's Pharmacist," declares that coffee enemas are safe when performed by holistic physicians and even at home in her Ask The Pharmacist column. Cohen goes on to say that coffee enemas can be used as therapeutic treatment for a number of conditions, like constipation, fatigue, liver detoxification, and cancer.4 Research has confirmed the effectiveness of administering therapeutic agents through the colon instead of the mouth.5

Cleansing or Retention: 2 Separate but Powerful Tools

There are two types of home enemas:

  1. The cleansing enema is retained for a short period of time until your natural peristaltic movement eliminates both the water and the loose fecal material. It is used to gently flush out the colon.
  2. The retention enema is held in the body for longer. For example, the famous "coffee enema" is retained for approximately 15 minutes or can also be left in and absorbed. Coffee enemas are an example of short-term (15-minute) retention enemas. They were made popular by Max Gerson, who used them with cancer patients to open the bile ducts and increase bile flow, helping to rid the liver of impurities.6 A 2007 analysis observed six case studies of cancer patients who followed Gerson therapy, which included treatment with coffee enemas. Patients on the Gerson regimen showed some evidence of both physical and psychological support, though further research is needed.7

Examples of cleansing enemas (added to water per enema kit instructions):

  • Apple Cider Vinegar - Helps with viral conditions and to clear mucous from the body. Great if you suffer from nasal congestion or asthma. (2-3 tbsp. diluted in water.) 
  • Burdock Root - Helps to eliminate calcium deposits and purify blood.
  • Catnip Tea - Relieves constipation and congestion and will bring down a high fever.
  • Lemon Juice - Just what you need to clean the colon of fecal matter, balance its pH, and detoxify the system.

Examples of retention enemas (added to water per enema kit instructions):

  • Coffee - A coffee solution (we mean a good organic breakfast blend, not decaf or instant) stimulates both the liver and the gallbladder to release toxins. (15 minutes only; please consult with your doctor if you have hypertension.)
  • Minerals - This is one you will want to retain permanently. It helps rebuild the energy of the adrenals and the thyroid.
  • Probiotic - Perfect for candidiasis and other yeast infections.
  • Red Raspberry Leaf - High in iron, great for the eyes, and particularly helpful for women.

Each enema requires a slightly different method, but the results for each will be glorious. When a smaller amount of liquid is retained permanently, we prefer to call this an implant. One cup of liquid with a probiotic, minerals, or something green with chlorophyll (like wheat grass) makes an excellent implant. They'll quickly have you on your way to a happier, healthier colon.

You Want Me to Put What, Where?!

Before you hit the "Exit" button, let us put your mind at ease. The thought of an enema can be a little off-putting, but they're really much more comfortable than you might anticipate.

In fact, an enema can be a very nurturing experience.

All you need is either a bag or a bucket (specifically designed with an enema in mind), a gentle catheter, a little coconut or olive oil for lubrication, clean water, and some privacy.   • Yes, i felt the article expected me to understand how and exactly what was expected. it was not clear, yet the author felt she was writing clearly for us who are completely ignorant of this cleansing technique

  • A 2 quarts of warm chamomile enema (sometimes a little more) that I use weekly is of great help for my allergic asthma. I took it gently, slowly, after a 40 - 60 minutes of yoga to have my body fully relaxed. The first times I was surprised how I can took easily 2 quarts (2 liters); I'm a young girl of 1,45 meters heigh and my weight is 38 kg. Relaxation is the most important secret for a good cleanse.

    I have a little request: these is an optimal volume of fluid for each body mass and height or is it important to listen my body only? (I always stop even at the little cramp, I always avoid unpleasant filling).

    These people do not know what they are talking about! Waste matter DOES NOT dry up and become encrusted on the wall of the colon. Their ignorance and willingness to spew these myths disqualifies them as credible "experts." The colon is not a dry pipe like a sewer line where material can become stuck and build up over time.

    • through x-rays and CT-scans, over a period of days, I will have to say that in my case it is definitely true that there can be lodgings within the colon. Enemas and hydrotherapy are the only way I know of to clear these build-ups.

  • After discovering the colon detox procedure with enemas, I reduced
    greatly (70%) my medicines for allergic asthma. Once a week I take a 1 -
    1,5 quarts enema with chamomile. I like to stay in Savasana yoga pose
    on a camping inflatable mat, more comfortable (soft) than a bed or a
    yoga mat. A camping mat partially inflated is great for a full relaxed
    and pleasant experience. I don't care about volume, I receive the fluid
    slowly, stopping when my body ask to stop. This small volume is great
    for me, no pain, no cramps, a pleasant cleaning experience. if don't
    feel clear with this one, I like to repeat the procedure in the evening
    (always I listen my body), with a similar volume. I close my eyes to
    listen my body only.

    Remember that pain and cramps are enemy of relax, so are allied with asthma!

    Four times a year I made a deeper cleansing, with a one day fasting with:

    a) 1,5 - 2 quarts chamomile enema early in the morning

    2 - 3 quarts chamomile enema in the afternoon (I took about 2,5 quarts,
    sometime less, sometimes a little more, other times I stopped before
    2). Always in a pleasant and comfortable detox experience, enjoying the
    healing power of the fluid entering in my colon. This must be a pure
    pleasant detox experience, I always avoid pain, cramps and any other
    type of discomfort. I love to listen nice music (Mozart, for example).
    Sometimes, when I feel fully relaxed, especially after a 30-60 minutes
    of yoga, I can took easily almost the whole bag.

    c) Before
    bedding, I took a strong chamomile enema (one quart or slightly less)
    with 6-8 chamomile tea-bags, sligtlly warmer than body temperature (39
    Celsius max!) Great to relax, great for a nice sleep! I love this one so
    much that I use it every time I want a super relaxing night!

    the day I integrated liquid, sugar and electrolites drinking water,
    Gatorade and eating some cookies and some small pieces of pure

    Also how often should you do them?

    I suffer from a lot of health issues including Brain Fog - it takes a lot of mental activity and time to write a simple paragraph like this! - So please provide Clear, Concise and Comprehensive Instructions on how to Effectively and Safely conduct at home these three Different Enemas and Protocols. I am sure this will help a lot of other readers aswell, and make doing enemas at home much more accessible!

    I use enemas to get rid of chronic constipation. It is simple and gives fast results.
    I use clear warm water in a 2 quart enema bag, ,usually I get results in less than a hour.

    I'm talking from experience it is possible to have 15kgs ( I'm from Australia ) if not more of backed up matter In your colon. Have you ever seen an autopsy done on a long time opiate user? As is common knowledge all opiates slow down your digestion and rob your digestive tract of vital water needed to promote healthy bowel function. In saying this I have seen the above situation and also myself have suffered from impaction where laxative after laxative and small volume enemas have failed. Check out some of the images available online of an impacted colon. You will be shocked at what you find.

      You might just have that much material in your bowels because you are full of crap! If you had 15 kgs of waste in your bowel, you would die! The human colon is incapable of holding that much material, let alone continue to function.

    I often use home enemas, as I have a "lazy bowel" I am not really sure what that means but Ive also food allergies. If I am toxic an enema makes me feel a lot better
