You already know that a healthy diet, regular exercise and plenty of sleep are good for your health and can help you live a longer life.

But what about meditation? Can practicing mindfulness help you live longer and better?

Studies show that mindful meditation practices decrease ruminative (wandering) thoughts and reduce stress. At the same time, meditating increasing positive thoughts in your brain and reduces stress arousal.1

So how does that work?

Meditation may promote telomere health. Telomeres are the protective ends of chromosomes, and are linked to longevity. Using this as a model, researchers are testing further connections between meditation and longevity relationships.2

Therefore, meditation may be a great way to slow aging and increase the quality of your life. And who doesn’t want to embrace that?

Making Time for Meditation

But with our busy schedules and crazy work-filled days, who has the time to sit and meditate regularly?

Sure, but the key here is to change your perspective about what’s important. Your emotional health is important! What would happen if you were to stop thinking about meditation and relaxation as a luxury, and instead view it as an essential element to your health that should be a priority in your daily life?

After all, stress effects 75% of us. Combating stress can help rid you of headaches, migraines, abdominal pain, gas, bloating, anxiety and tension.

Set aside some time every day, even if it’s only 10 minutes. We recommend meditating upon waking and again before going to sleep. Using this time to meditate and calm down can help you tackle the rest of your day with energy and enthusiasm.

There are other ways to relax and lower your stress levels, such as:

  • getting enough sleep. It decreases cortisol levels (your stress hormone)
  • spending time with people you enjoy and who make you laugh
  • exercising. It reduces anxiety and tension
  • participating in calming activities you enjoy, such as reading and yoga
