Studies Show Tea’s Important Detoxification Properties

You may have heard of the many benefits of green tea and black tea, but did you know that tea has detoxification enzymes?
Researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Maryland, US found thatdrinking 5 cups of black tea per day could lower levels of LDL cholesterol and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Another study on tea, conducted by Arizona College of Public Health, University of Arizona and Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson found thatoxidative DNA damage dropped by a significant 31 per cent after heavy smokers drank four cups of green tea daily for four months.
Oxidative damage contributes to aging and disease, like cancer and cardiovascular disease. Researchers concluded that green tea helps the body detoxify from the damage of smoking, thereby reducing cancer risk.
So what makes tea such a great detoxifier?
Both green tea and black tea are rich in polyphenols, which are antioxidants and “inducers of phase-2 detoxification enzymes,” according to Dr Iman A. Hakim, the division director of Health Promotional Sciences at the Arizona Cancer Center and research associate professor of Public Health at the College of Public Health, University of Arizona.
To understand how enzyme systems in detoxification work, let’s take a look at phase-1 and phase-2 detoxification:
- Phase I Detoxification System – this is first enzymatic defense against foreign compounds in your body. In this step of detoxification, reactive molecules are formed, some of which may be more toxic than the original compound.
- Phase II Detoxification System – this is the second enzymatic defense, which takes the toxins from phase I and further metabolizes them, allowing them to be excreted via urine or bile. Without this “phase II conjugation,” cell damage may be caused. Phase II detoxification requires cofactors that must be obtained through your diet.
As you can see when reading about phase I and phase II detoxification, it’s clear that not only is it important toreduce your exposure to toxins, it’s also important to make sure that your diet contains nutrients that support the liver during phase II detoxification.

While the study on the benefits of green tea conducted by Arizona College of Public Health, University of Arizona and Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson seems to indicate that green tea is better than black tea, the primary reason was that the green tea used in the study was higher in polyphenols.
