Who is Donna Gates?
Donna Gates is the founder of Body Ecology and author of The Body Ecology Diet. She began teaching about gut health and fermented foods more than 30 years ago, when they were far from everyday topics.
In 1994, Donna introduced probiotics and fermented foods to the U.S. and coined the phrase “inner ecosystem.” She used it to explain an idea that still guides Body Ecology: digestion doesn’t happen in isolation. The way you eat and care for your gut is part of how you care for your whole body.
Still, Donna didn’t stop at telling people to “take a probiotic.” She taught them how to make fermented foods, rethink the food on their plates, and build habits they could use at home. Her books, recipes, and products all come from that work.
What does “Body Ecology” mean?
An ecology is a community of living things and the environment they share. Your gut has one, too. Donna Gates calls it your inner ecosystem.
What you eat helps shape that environment. It can affect which microbes thrive there and how well your gut does its job. That’s why Body Ecology looks beyond a single supplement. Donna’s approach brings together everyday food choices, fermented foods, and habits that support a healthy gut. The name is a reminder that your gut is a living system, and caring for it is something you do day by day.
What makes Body Ecology different from other gut health brands?
Body Ecology began with a food philosophy, not a single supplement. Donna Gates has taught people to make and eat fermented foods for decades, and the product line reflects that. It includes cultures for making kefir and vegetables at home, finished fermented drinks for convenience, greens, enzymes, minerals, and educational resources.
You can buy a product on its own, but you can also learn why it exists and how it fits into your meals. That depth of education is a meaningful difference for someone who wants to understand their choices.
Where should a beginner start with Body Ecology?
Start with one change you can see yourself keeping. If you want to add a fermented drink without learning to make one, look at CocoBiotic. If you already make smoothies, Vitality SuperGreen may fit naturally into that habit. If you like preparing food, try Veggie Culture Starter or Kefir Starter and follow the provided instructions.
You can also begin with Donna’s books or educational resources before buying a supplement. Body Ecology is an approach you can learn step by step; you do not need to build a complicated routine on day one.

Why does Body Ecology focus so much on fermented foods?
Donna Gates has taught people to make fermented foods for decades because they offer a way to bring beneficial microbes into everyday meals. Kefir and cultured vegetables are two examples. They’re foods you can learn to make and enjoy, rather than another capsule to remember.
That said, making them yourself takes some time. Body Ecology offers culture starters and instructions if you want to try it. We also offer prepared fermented drinks, such as our Probiotic Liquids like Cocobiotic, InnergyBiotic, and BeetBiotic if you want a simpler place to begin. Always feel free to choose the approach that fits your life!
Are all Body Ecology products probiotics?
No. Probiotics and fermented foods are central to Body Ecology, but they’re only part of what we offer. Our range also includes prebiotics, digestive enzymes, greens, minerals, nutritional supplements, books, and courses.
Some products are ready to use, while others help you make fermented foods at home. If you’re unsure where to begin, you can get immediate support by chatting with Donna AI here.
What is the difference between probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes?
They help with different parts of digestion:
- Digestive enzymes help break down the meal you’re eating. You take them with food.
- Probiotics add helpful bacteria to your gut. They’re usually taken regularly to support gut health over time.
- Prebiotics feed the helpful bacteria in your gut, including bacteria you get from probiotics.
If you want help digesting a meal, look at enzymes. If you want to care for your gut over time, look at probiotics and prebiotics. You don’t have to take all three.
Is CocoBiotic the same as kefir?
Both are fermented drinks, but they are different products. CocoBiotic is a finished, nondairy drink made with fermented coconut water. You can use it directly from the bottle; Body Ecology’s directions suggest 2 to 3 ounces per day.
Kefir Starter is a culture used to make your own kefir with dairy milk, plant milk, or coconut water. It requires preparation and fermentation time. Choose CocoBiotic if you want convenience. Choose Kefir Starter if you want to make and customize a fresh batch at home.
Can I make Body Ecology fermented foods without dairy?
Yes. Body Ecology’s Veggie Culture Starter is for fermenting vegetables. Its Kefir Starter can be used with plant milk or coconut water as well as dairy milk. That gives you ways to explore fermentation without making milk kefir.
If you avoid dairy because of an allergy, check the current package and allergen information before buying a starter. The liquid you choose may be dairy free, but that does not by itself answer questions about how a starter was made or handled.
What is Vitality SuperGreen, and how is it different from a probiotic drink?
Vitality SuperGreen is a powder you mix into water or a smoothie. Its formula includes fermented grasses and algae, a probiotic blend, prebiotic fiber, and L-glutamine. It is designed as a daily greens drink.
CocoBiotic is a bottled fermented probiotic drink. It does not require scooping or mixing. If you want a greens supplement, explore Vitality SuperGreen. If you want a small serving of a ready-to-drink fermented product, explore CocoBiotic. They have different ingredients and uses, so check the labels if you are deciding between them.
Do I have to follow the Body Ecology Diet to use these products?
No. You can use an individual product according to its directions without following the entire diet. The Body Ecology Diet and The Body Ecology Living Cookbook explain Donna’s broader approach to food choices, balance, and fermented foods if you want more context.
For some people, a ready-to-drink probiotic or a greens powder is the first practical step. Others want recipes, a book, or instruction on making cultured foods. Body Ecology offers both products and education, so you can start at the level that feels useful to you.
