Interview with Olympic Champion Catherine Garceau: On Overcoming Candida and Depression and Achieving Better Health with The Body Ecology Diet

Olympian Catherine Garceau reveals how Body Ecology and getting back to nature is a huge piece of the puzzle when it comes to healing your body, getting rid of extra weight, and becoming in tune with your joyful self!

Catherine Garceau is an Olympic champion. Her synchronized swimming career may be behind her, but that doesn’t mean she’s hanging her hat on her Olympic success and going home!

Having struggled with and overcome an eating disorder, depression, and other health problems, she is currently a devoted speaker, activist and writer determined to share what she’s learned along the way, and help humankind find true health and happiness.

In this interview, she tells us about her journey to health, and her latest venture, “Be Fit and Be Free” a renewal and natural cleansing program into which she incorporates The Body Ecology Diet’s principles for joyful living.

Q. Catherine, when did you embark on your journey towards healing, and what’s it been like?

A. I’d say it’s been since about 2004 that I took the path towards natural healing, and wow…it’s been an amazing journey of roller coaster ups and downs and profound self-discovery.

What I noticed was that the downs were an absolutely essential step in my healing because it was precisely those moments when I’d hit a wall that another piece of the puzzle would be revealed to me.

With each piece of the puzzle put in place, my healing would go to a deeper and deeper level.

I knew I had problems with candida, and had been on the path towards trying to eliminate it. I’d done a lot of cleansing diets, and I’d experimented and worked with the raw food diet. But nothing seemed to completely rid me of the candida, which I knew was a major source of my ills.

Q. When did you find The Body Ecology Diet?

The Body Ecology DIetMore and more people are beginning to call The Body Ecology Diet their healthbible. More than a diet, Body Ecology is a way of life for anyone who wants vitality, good health, immunity, and longevity. A. About two and half years ago. I was inspired by other stories of those who had healed themselves by embracing the Body Ecology Diet.

I had a hard time completely committing to it at first after having followed raw food principles. The Body Ecology diet includes meat and cooked grains, which I was worried about because they weren’t “raw.”

What followed was a sort of balancing act between raw food principles and Body Ecology, and I found that it worked really well.

Body Ecology is based on eliminating all sugars (even most fruit sugars),gluten, and casein from your diet in order to truly eliminate candida. That was the key I’d been looking for.

I realized I was eating way too many fruits and lots of nuts while following the raw food principles, which didn’t really fit my body’s needs or allow me to rid myself of candida.

Q. What is it about Body Ecology that has made you want to teach others at your retreat about it?

A. Incorporating the Body Ecology principles has been like night and day in terms of my healing struggles.

Body Ecology put me totally back on track, and on an even plane. No more highs and lows. I am able to sustain my energy throughout the day, and I love the principle of eating until you are 80% full. At first it’s hard to know what that feels like, but when you learn it, you’re learning how to listen to your body and it feels good!

I don’t take any extremist views anymore when it comes to diet, and it’s easy to incorporate the Body Ecology principles into any dietary programonce you understand them. It’s a lot more flexible than you think, and can fit any lifestyle.

I still eat mostly raw foods, but I also eat a little meat and little fish here and there. I eat a lot of raw fish in ceviche (a citrus-marinated sea food dish) and I eat cooked grains when I feel like I need them.

I also eat a lot of cultured vegetables, and I love Young Coconut Kefir, which is the fermented beverage made from young green coconut water, created by Body Ecology founder, Donna Gates.

A lot of people don’t know how good fermented foods and drinks are for your health, so I even teach people how to make fermented foods and drinks, like cultured vegetables and young coconut kefir at my retreat.

Fermented foods and drinks and the importance of the inner ecosystem are a huge piece of the puzzle that is missing in most other health programs.

“Fermented foods and drinks are a big piece of the puzzle missing in most other health programs,” says former Olympian, Catherine Garceau.
