One key issue overlooked in the autism discussion is the role infection plays in the disorder. Understanding some fundamental concepts will enable us to begin the discussion on prevention.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) just released numbers from a recent study - and what it implies is staggering: we are facing an epidemic of children with autism.
According to the CDC, one in 88 children is now diagnosed with the disorder.
We now know that autism spectrum disorder goes beyond genetic risk factors, or information that we inherit from our parents’ DNA.
In fact, a 2011 Stanford University School of Medicine study found that 62 percent of autism risk is attributed to environmental factors. (3)
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) suggests that one example of an environmental factor is mercury, which is a neurotoxic chemical. While we know that mercury is a waste chemical and that it is even used in the dental industry, many of us are unaware that mercury is also often found in high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). (4)

Autism has become a nationwide epidemic. And researchers point to neurotoxic chemicals found in our food supply in the form of high fructose corn syrup, most often used in canned foods, baked goods, carbonated drinks, and even fruit juice.

This is accurate. And by bringing attention to common food toxins, science is taking a step in the right direction. However, this is only part of the picture.
While toxic compounds in our environment and in our food may certainly contribute to the development of autism, we are failing to see how all these elements relate to one another.
For example, another study that was released this past month tells us that children born to diabetic, hypertensive, or obese mothers have a higher risk of developing autism. (6) One food that contributes to diabetes, hypertension, and obesity is HFCS.
Through our work with over 800 families of autistic children, we have recognized a common denominator - every child we have worked with has had a fungal infection. Research needs to start focusing on this common denominator.
The poorer our diets become, the more common it is for us to carry multiple infections -including fungal and yeast infections. High-sugar diets not only feed infectious bacteria and yeast, but they also weaken immune system response.
During pregnancy, a mother’s immune system swings into what is known as a TH2-dominant state.
A TH2-dominant state means that the mother’s immune system is less reactive against viruses, fungi, parasites, and bacteria. This immune system swing protects the baby. Otherwise, the immune system would prompt the rejection of the fetus and placenta.
Chronic infections passed to the baby not only weaken a baby’s immune system but inhibit the body’s natural process of eliminating toxins and heavy metals. This is a central reason why so many autistic children do not have a healthy inner ecosystem and thus are constipated and unable to eliminate waste properly or have severe diarrhea, causing malabsorption.
The Body Ecology theory is that when these babies with weakened immune systems are vaccinated, the vaccine actually infects the body, instead of inoculating it, with a systemic infection. This infection acts as a carrier to transport the vaccine strain and the toxins in the vaccine (like mercury) into the brain.
While science must slowly piece together information based on research, many parents of autistic children feel paralyzed by the conventional medical system and lack of answers.
