On your journey to peak health and vitality, there will be hurdles and steps to overcome – and breaking a sugar addiction is one of them. Just remember that even the smallest steps bring you closer to victory!

This is the second article in our exciting new Spotlight on Body Ecology series. Our first article can be found here.

In today’s fast-paced culture, we want results, and we want them fast. In the daily battle of meeting needs and wants, too often the solution that promises instant gratification comes ahead of choices that require patience, persistence, and reason.

Nowhere is the demand for instant gratification more apparent than in the Standard American Diet (S.A.D.), where fast food meals, energy drinks, and quick over-the-counter remedies have replaced fresh meals and your body’s need for rest and TLC.

If you are suffering from the toxic effects of a lifestyle lived in the fast-lane, such as stress, fatigue, weight gain, muscle aches, or an overall diminishment in your zest for life, there are no quick fixes.

The impurities and toxins that have built up in your system over the years cannot possibly be eliminated all at once.

Body Ecology is about natural healing – not instant healing. Although you will begin to feel better soon after you start the Diet, true healing takes time.

The Principle of Step-by-Step tells us to be patient with ourselves – and remember that every thousand mile journey begins with just one step.

Once you commit to tossing your old, unhealthy self aside in favor of creating a new, joyful, and vibrant you, you have already taken the first step!

The next steps ahead may seem difficult at first, but we can promise that each step will get easier and soon you will begin to see a positive difference in how you feel each day.

Let’s take a look at one of the first hurdles you must overcome.

Saying Goodbye to Sugar!

Yes, eliminating sugar is a major hurdle for many people, and we here at Body Ecology truly understand.

After all, ancient wisdom from Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine tells us that humans naturally crave a sweet taste, and it is an essential part of balancing the other tastes found in nature, like salty, bitter, and sour flavors.

The problem is that we have forced our bodies out of balance by consuming an overabundance of refined sugar.

Many of you know that sugar is bad for you, but you probably don’t know why having even small amounts of it can sabotage your best efforts.

Sugar Addiction and Your Inner Ecosystem

Inside your body is a thriving inner ecosystem of microflora (good bacteria and yeast) that keep you healthy and strong. These healthy bacteria and yeast (a type of fungi) help you digest food, absorb nutrients, regulate your blood sugar, and manufacture vitamins and minerals.

Too much sugar or a high-stress lifestyle can create an environment inside you that encourages the growth of disease-causing bacteria and candida yeast.

What’s worse, someone who has a candida infection can often look fine yet feel horrible without understanding why.

That’s because symptoms of a candida infection, such as fatigue, mood swings, digestive disorders, frequent colds, muscle aches, and foggy thinking, are so generalized that the infection is difficult to detect or is often mistaken for other illnesses.

Sadly, our society tells us that a caffeine habit, popping pills, or downing antacids to get through the day is normal. These are just further examples of how instant fixes have taken the place of step-by-step healing.

Eliminating refined sugar is a must on your step-by-step transition to health and vitality for many reasons that you can find out more about here.

It’s important to note that in the first stages of The Body Ecology Diet and until you have had time to create and balance your inner ecosystem, you should also avoid certain fruits.

Many fruits are too sweet and encourage the growth of candida yeast, so the only ones you should eat are sour fruits and their juices. Fortunately, there are many of these fruits to choose from. Lemons, limes, kiwi, berries, and unsweetened juices, like pomegranate juice, cranberry juice, and black currant juice, are delicious and should satisfy your craving for fruit. Noni juice, mangosteen juice, and acai juice (from Genesis Today) are also sour and sugar-free. Genesis Today juices can be found in your health food store and are highly recommended by Body Ecology because of their excellent quality.

Mix any of these sour juices into water – or better yet into one of our probiotic liquids (InnergyBiotic, Cocobiotic, Dong Quai) – add a few drops of our delicious-tasting liquid stevia concentrate, and you’ve created an energy-boosting “probiotic juice”. Stevia is especially delicious with fruits from the acid fruit family.

Depriving the pathogenic bacteria and yeast in your system of sugar may create powerful cravings and uncomfortable symptoms of yeast die-off, and for this reason, the first three to five days on the Diet can be difficult for some.

If a slip-up derails you, don’t worry. Keep eating the probiotic foods we recommend and drink young coconut kefir and the other probiotic liquids, and you will soon find that those cravings disappear.

Whenever you feel like you are going too fast, and it’s too difficult for you, step back until you can go forward again. Sugar in any form is very addictive. If you eat it today, you will crave it tomorrow. Sugar cravings take about four days to go away on their own if you use sheer willpower to avoid sugar entirely. However, if you eat and drink fermented foods and beverages, the cravings will gradually and naturally disappear.

If sugar cravings persist, know that this is a sign that your adrenals need serious nutritional support with diet, herbs, and many nights of deep, healing sleep.  A mineral-rich, sugar-free diet is essential if you are going to repair your adrenals, so the sugar must go. If you crave sugar when you need energy and give in to that craving, just remember that it’s only a short-term fix. Soon you will be back in that same place again – craving more sugar – but this time with even weaker adrenals.

Remember, don’t let slip-ups derail you. Develop your willpower step-by-step, and use fermented foods to help. Step By Step isn’t about immediate perfection. Indeed, mastery of the Body Ecology Diet and Way of Life takes time. We guarantee that if you stick with it, you will soon see that it’s well worth the effort!

Body Ecology Solutions

Luckily, we have some great solutions to help you control sweet cravings and free your body from sugar addiction!

  • Body Ecology Stevia Liquid Concentrate is the best tasting stevia on the market. Stevia is a natural sugar substitute made from the stevia plant. It is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar, so it doesn’t take much to give you that wonderful sweet taste – without calories, feeding yeast in your body, or causing a spike in your blood sugar. Beware of artificial sweeteners, as they are proven UN-healthy alternatives to sugar. Choosing a natural sugar substitute is the only way to go.
  • Fermented foods and drinks are a pillar of The Body Ecology Diet because they populate your gut with beneficial microflora that is essential to establishing a healthy inner ecosystem. If we want to live a longer, healthier, and happier life, we must maintain an eco-balance inside our intestines throughout our entire lifespan. Beneficial bacteria and yeast are easily obtained from delicious, sour fermented foods and beverages.

And of course, as we mentioned above, you will also discover that fermented foods and drinks are powerful allies in eliminating cravings for sweets. Around the world, many people are joining The Body Ecology “tribe”, and they tell us that they’re amazed that they no longer have a desire for sweets! They are quite satisfied with the sweetness they get from vegetables and the Body Ecology grain-like seeds (quinoa, millet, amaranth, and buckwheat).

Be Kind and Patient with Yourself

That’s what the Step-by-Step Principle is ultimately all about. Healing is like climbing a mountain. Don’t get discouraged or allow yourself to become overwhelmed because you can’t see the top yet. As you take each step, you will become stronger, and your understanding and clarity will increase!
